Last season, I despaired that Nick Fallin (Simon Baker) would ever graduate from his own Ground Hog Day, so intent was he on repeating emotional history.

But creator David Hollander has advanced the plot a little, giving Nick a serious love interest in Lulu (Wendy Moniz) who in turn has given Burton Fallin (Dabney Coleman) something novel to think about - someone who won't be bullied.

Hoorah!

Although Nick is still ambivalent about life and love, he does have a whole new set of issues to worry about: marriage, impending fatherhood and divided loyalties - and not just between the legal-aid service and his firm, but between his father and his fiancee.

Meanwhile, the law threatens to make asses of them all.

Tonight, Nick and Burton do the dirty work for a developer intent on evicting a group of squatters.

They include an elderly man and his grandson who are devoted to each other but face certain separation until Lulu uncovers a legal loophole that puts her on a collision course with Burton.

The case also creates a conflict of interest for Nick, before it takes a sudden and unexpected turn.
